Anchorage is a small, quiet place in Atascosa County, Texas. It's not a big city with its own government. Instead, it's an "unincorporated community." This means it's a settlement without its own local government. It is located near the larger San Antonio area.
History of Anchorage
Anchorage got its start a long time ago. In 1889, a post office opened there. It helped people send and receive mail until 1935. The name "Anchorage" came from an early settler. He said he wanted to "anchor here," like a ship dropping its anchor.
In 1889, a sailor from Scotland named Thomas Whittet bought a large piece of land. It was about 200 acres. The community quickly grew. By the next year, it had a general store. This store sold many different things.
Six years later, Anchorage had another general store. It also had a cotton gin. A cotton gin is a machine that separates cotton fibers from their seeds. At this time, about 15 people lived there. By 1914, the population grew to 120 people. There was even a doctor named M.J. Whittet.
By 1933, Anchorage had only one business left. In the 1940s, the community had a cemetery and a church. There was also a factory and a few houses. The factory was gone by 1960. However, Anchorage was still shown on county maps in 1990.
