The Anchorage Woman’s Club (AWC) is a special group of women. They formed their club in 1915. This club was very important in helping to build the first school in Anchorage, Alaska.
A Club with a Mission: History
The Anchorage Woman’s Club began in 1915. Mrs. Fredrick Mears and other women started it. Their main goal was to create a school for children. These children belonged to the workers building the Alaska Railroad. The women worked hard and succeeded. They built the Pioneer School House. This was the very first school in Anchorage.
The AWC is also part of a bigger group. It is a member of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs. This is a large organization focused on helping communities. The AWC works on many different projects. These include programs for arts, protecting nature, education, home life, and helping people in other countries. They also discuss important public issues.
What the Club Does: Activities
In 1964, a big earthquake hit Alaska. The Pioneer School House survived the earthquake. The AWC worked to save this historic building. They helped move the school eleven blocks away. It was then placed on a strong new foundation.
Today, the Anchorage Woman’s Club still manages the Pioneer School House. The city of Anchorage now owns the building. It is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. This means it is a very important historical site. The club is currently helping with renovations. These updates are happening after the school's 100th birthday in 2015.
