Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Ancient Monuments Society (AMS) is a group of experts and a charity in England and Wales. It was started in 1924 to study and protect old monuments, historic buildings, and beautiful old craftsmanship. Since October 2021, the group has been using the name Historic Buildings & Places (HB&P).

What They Do

The Ancient Monuments Society is known as one of the main groups that helps protect important places. Because of this, they are told whenever someone wants to make big changes or knock down parts of a protected historic building in England and Wales. The government decides how this process works, with the most recent rules set by a government department in 2021.

New Name

In 2021, the leaders of the society decided to start using "Historic Buildings & Places" as the group's new name. This change happened on October 1st.

Who Leads the Group

The president of the society is Richard Fletcher-Vane, 2nd Baron Inglewood. The chairman of the trustees, who are like the board members, is an architect named Giles Quarme. Liz Power became the director in February 2023. She used to be the director of the London Museum of Water & Steam.

Working with Friends of Friendless Churches

From 1993 to 2021, the Ancient Monuments Society worked together with another group called the Friends of Friendless Churches. They shared an office and staff, and people could join both groups at once. However, they still managed their money and decisions separately. This partnership happened because Ivor Bulmer-Thomas started the Friends of Friendless Churches group. He was also a leader at the Ancient Monuments Society. The two groups friendly decided to stop working together on September 27, 2021, because the Friends group asked to.
