The Andover Chapter House is a special old building in Andover, Illinois. It was built between 1909 and 1910. This building was a meeting place for a group called the American Woman's League.

Today, the Andover Chapter House is a private home. It is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is an important historical site.

What Was the American Woman's League?

The American Woman's League was a group started in 1908. A magazine publisher named Edward Gardner Lewis created it. The group worked to support women's rights.

A main goal was to help women get the right to vote. This movement was called women's suffrage. The League also helped sell Lewis's magazines.

Special Buildings for Women

Edward Gardner Lewis wanted the League to have meeting places. He hired an architectural firm from St. Louis to design these buildings. The firm was called Helfensteller, Hirsch & Watson.

They designed five different types of buildings. Each type was for clubs with different numbers of members. The Andover Chapter House is a "Class I" building. This type was made for clubs with 30 to 60 members.

Designed in a Unique Style

The Andover Chapter House was designed in the Prairie School style. This style is known for its flat roofs and strong horizontal lines. It often uses natural materials.

The building cost $1,200 to build at the time. This was a good amount of money back then.

A Place in History

The American Woman's League eventually stopped meeting. The Andover Chapter House was then changed into a private home.

On November 28, 1980, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This list includes places that are important to American history. The Andover Chapter House is one of nine such buildings in Illinois. These buildings were all meeting places for the American Woman's League.
