Andrés Marzal de Sas (also known as Andreu Marçal de Sax) was a talented painter from the Netherlands. He lived and worked in the city of Valencia, Spain, between about 1390 and 1410. His name suggests he might have come from a place called Sas van Gent. However, some people think he was from Saxony, which is a region in Germany.

Andrés Marzal de Sas is known for his unique painting style. He often worked with other artists. For example, he teamed up with Pere Nicolau from 1393 to 1399. One of his most famous paintings, called "Doubting Thomas" (also known as "The Incredulity of Saint Thomas"), can be seen today in the museum of Valencia Cathedral.

Who Was Andrés Marzal de Sas?

Andrés Marzal de Sas was a very important artist for his time. He is considered one of the main artists who brought the "International Gothic" style to Spain. This style was popular across Europe and featured elegant, detailed, and often colorful art. He also helped introduce "Early Netherlandish painting" to Spain. This style was known for its realistic details and rich colors, often using oil paints.

His Life and Art

Marzal de Sas often worked with other painters on big projects. From 1405 to 1407, he collaborated with an artist named Guerau Gener [es]. He also worked with Gonçal Peris Sarrià in 1405 on a special painting for a church, which showed the birth of Jesus (a "Nativity altarpiece").

Marzal de Sas had a big influence on other artists. You can see his style in the Gothic altarpiece of Santes Creus, which Guerau Gener painted with Lluís Borrassà. This shows how his ideas and techniques spread to other artists in Spain.

Famous Artworks

Some art experts believe that Andrés Marzal de Sas might have painted parts of a very important artwork called the "Altarpiece of Saint George." This altarpiece is also known as the "Centenar de la Ploma." This name comes from a special group of crossbowmen who protected the official flags of Valencia back in 1365.

The "Altarpiece of Saint George" also shows a famous historical event: the Battle of the Puig. This battle was very important for Valencia. The part of the altarpiece showing the Battle of the Puig was painted around 1400. Today, you can see this amazing panel at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Some experts think that Marzal de Sas might have only helped with this altarpiece, and that another artist, Miguel Alcañiz [es], did most of the main parts.

Sadly, a document from 1410 tells us that Andrés Marzal de Sas became very sick and poor. Because of this, the City Council of Valencia decided to give him a pension. This was a payment to help him live, showing how much they valued his work as an artist.
