Andrea Cantelmo was an important military leader from Naples, Italy. He lived from 1598 to 1645. He commanded armies for the powerful Habsburg family. He fought in several big wars across Europe. These included the Thirty Years' War and the Eighty Years' War.

Life of Andrea Cantelmo
Andrea Cantelmo was born in Pettorano sul Gizio, Italy. This was on August 2, 1598. His father was the Duke of Popoli.
In 1620, Andrea became a captain. He led a group of soldiers called arquebusiers. These soldiers used a type of early rifle. He first served in a place called Valtelline.
Early Military Career
Later, he joined the army of Emperor Ferdinand II. He became a leader of cavalry. Cavalry are soldiers who fight on horseback. He fought in Bohemia.
Then he went back to Italy. There, he helped in the "Relief of Genoa." This was a military action to help the city of Genoa. He also fought in the War of the Mantuan Succession. He was part of the Siege of Casale.
Serving in Flanders
In 1631, Cantelmo moved to the Army of Flanders. He served in the Rhineland area. Later, he fought in Picardy. He became a general of artillery. Artillery means large guns, like cannons.
He played a key role in the Habsburg victory. This was at the Battle of Kallo in 1638. Cantelmo was also interested in history and politics. He wrote about how to fight wars. Sadly, his writings have not been found.
Later Years and Command
By 1644, Cantelmo was in Spain. He became a member of the Council of War. This group helped make important military decisions. He was also given command of the Army of Catalonia. He served as the acting captain general there.
Andrea Cantelmo died in Alcubierre on November 5, 1645.
