His Life and Art

The Transfigured Christ (1513)

Andrea Previtali learned to paint from a famous artist named Giovanni Bellini. Bellini was a very important painter of his time.

Previtali created many beautiful artworks. In Bergamo, he painted a work called John the Baptist preaching with other saints in 1515. This painting was made for the church of Santo Spirito. He also painted San Benedetto and other saints for Bergamo Cathedral. Another important work is Deposition from the Cross for Sant'Andrea church.

You can find more of his paintings in art galleries. Some are in the Accademia Carrara in Italy. Others are in the National Gallery, London in England. These include Salvator Mundi and The Virgin and Child with a Shoot of Olive. These two paintings were given to the gallery in 1910.

In 1937, some of Previtali's paintings became famous in the United Kingdom. This happened because two small paintings were bought by the Director of the National Gallery, Kenneth Clark. These paintings showed country scenes. At first, some people thought they might be by a more famous artist named Giorgione. But later, experts like G. M. Richter confirmed that they were indeed painted by Previtali. This showed how important Previtali's art was.

Previtali's most famous painting is an Annunciation. This artwork is shown here in the picture at the top of the article. It is placed above the main altar in a small church called Santa Maria del Meschio in Vittorio Veneto, Italy.
