Andrew Ellis (born 1792 – died 1867) was an important Irish surgeon. He became the president of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) in 1849. This was a very respected position for a surgeon in Ireland.

Early Life and Education

Andrew Ellis was born in a place called Kilpool in County Wicklow, Ireland. He decided to study medicine. He went to the RCSI school to learn. He also studied at two hospitals: the Meath Hospital and Sir Patrick Dun's Hospital.

Becoming a Surgeon

In 1820, Andrew Ellis earned his first medical qualification, called the LRCSI. This meant he was ready to practice medicine. A few years later, in 1827, he was chosen to be a Member of the RCSI. This was a big step in his career.

Teaching and Hospital Work

Andrew Ellis was not just a surgeon; he was also a teacher. He worked as a surgeon at St. Mary's Hospital in Dublin. At the same time, he taught anatomy at the Peter Street Medical School. Anatomy is the study of the body's structure.

Later, in 1837, he became a Professor of Surgery at the Apothecaries' Hall. He also taught surgery at the Catholic University Medical School. He helped many students learn about surgery.

Ellis also worked as a surgeon at other places. He was a surgeon at Jervis Street Hospital. He also worked at Maynooth College, which is a famous college in Ireland.

Contributions to Medicine

Andrew Ellis wrote articles for medical newspapers in Dublin. He shared his knowledge with other doctors. In 1846, he published a special book about clinical surgery. This book helped doctors learn more about how to treat patients.
