A Career in Law

Andrew Mure chose to work in law. He became a lawyer in Scotland in 1853. This is known as being "called to the Scottish Bar".

Serving in Scotland

In 1860, he became an advocate depute. This is a lawyer who helps the government with legal cases. Later, from 1865 to 1878, he worked as a Sheriff-Substitute in Shetland. A Sheriff-Substitute is a judge who handles many different legal cases in a specific area of Scotland.

Becoming a Judge in Mauritius

After his work in Scotland, Sir Andrew Mure moved to Mauritius. He became a judge on the supreme court there in 1880. He worked as a judge in Mauritius for 15 years. He finished his time there as a senior puisne judge. This means he was one of the main judges on the court.

Later Life and Legacy

Andrew Mure married Elizabeth Slight in 1860. His wife passed away in 1908. Sir Andrew Mure himself died on 10 October 1909. He was 82 years old and passed away at his home in Edinburgh. He was made a Knight Bachelor on 14 January 1899. This means he was given the title "Sir" for his important work.
