The Andrew Wilcox House, also known as the Wilcox-Holton House, is a historic family home. You can find it at 231 East High Street in Jackson, Michigan. This special house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. This means it's an important building recognized for its history and unique design.
A Home with a Story
Andrew Wilcox and his brother Homer were business partners. They owned a company called A. and H. Wilcox Company. This company worked with wood, selling lumber and building materials. They also had a special mill that smoothed and shaped wood.
In 1870, the brothers opened their wood mill in Jackson, Michigan. Andrew Wilcox then built this very house for his family. It was finished in 1871. Andrew likely retired from the business in the early 1880s. Both Andrew Wilcox and his wife passed away in 1891.
In 1893, George Holton became the new owner of the house. Mr. Holton ran a company that made metal parts and machines. He lived in the house until he passed away in 1903. The house then went to his wife, Ella, and later to their son, Fred. Fred passed away in 1933. His wife, Marie, continued to live in the house for many years. She moved into a nursing home in 1975.
What Does the House Look Like?
The Wilcox House is a two-story building. It has a unique "T" shape. A tall, three-story tower stands in the middle of the house. The house is built in the Italianate style. This style was popular in the 1800s.
The outside walls are covered with wooden boards called clapboard. It has special flat columns at the corners. The roof is low and gently sloped. The house sits on a strong foundation made of fieldstone.
The windows are either single or double panes of glass. They have decorative tops that curve like an "S" shape. The main front doors are rounded at the top. Other doors have square tops. A porch runs all the way across the front of the house. This porch has fancy posts and railings. There are also three other small porches around the house.
