About Andrews Railway Station
Andrews Railway Station was a small train station. It was located in the Hutt Valley, New Zealand. The station was part of the Hutt Valley Line. This line ran along the western side of the valley. Andrews Station opened in 1938. It closed on February 28, 1954. This happened when a part of the line, from Melling to Belmont, was shut down.
Andrews Station was situated between other stations. It was north of Melling and Belmont stations. It was south of a place called Gosse & Co’s siding. All these spots were on the section of the line that later closed.
Its Beginning
Andrews Station opened in 1938. It took the place of an older station. That station was called Pitcaithly's. The building from Pitcaithly's was moved. It went south to the new Andrews location. This move was to better serve the people living nearby. The area was mostly rural.
Why the Station Moved
In 1938, a government official spoke about the move. He was Dan Sullivan, the Minister of Railways. He said the decision was made two years earlier. This was because many more people lived near the new Andrews site. There were more people there than near Pitcaithly's. The move was not part of bigger plans. It was not about general improvements to Hutt Valley train services. Those larger plans had not yet been discussed by the government.
How it was Spelled
The name "Andrews" for the station was always spelled without an apostrophe. This was different from the older "Pitcaithly's" station.
