Putter was born in a town called Brits in 1935.
Andries Putter first worked in the Merchant Navy, which is a group of ships that carry goods and people around the world. In 1960, he decided to join the official South African Navy. This was a big change from carrying cargo to serving his country.
Leading the Fleet
Putter quickly showed he was a strong leader. In 1969, he became the commander of a ship called the SAS Port Elizabeth. This ship was a minesweeper, designed to find and clear dangerous underwater mines. At the same time, he became the Senior Officer for all the minesweeper ships. This meant he was in charge of a whole group of these important vessels.
His career continued to rise. In 1982, he was made the Chief of Naval Staff. This was a very high position, helping to manage the entire Navy. Just three years later, in 1985, he was appointed as the Chief of the Navy. This made him the highest-ranking officer in the South African Navy. After his time leading the Navy, he also served as the Chief of Defence Intelligence. In this role, he was responsible for gathering important information to help keep the country safe.
His Final Years
Andries Putter passed away in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 2014. He was 78 years old.
