The Androscoggin Yacht Club is a special club located at 22 Lake Street in Wayne, Maine. It sits right on the shore of Androscoggin Lake. This club started in 1909. It offers its members a beach, docks for boats, and a clubhouse. The clubhouse itself is very old and important. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2012. This was because of its unique design and how the club helped the area become a popular summer spot.
About the Androscoggin Yacht Club
The village of Wayne is located between two lakes. Androscoggin Lake is to the south, and Pocasset Lake is to the north. The Androscoggin Yacht Club is found on the south side of Wayne. It sits in a quiet cove on the northeast part of Androscoggin Lake.
What Does the Clubhouse Look Like?
The clubhouse is built on a tall stone base. This gives it amazing views of the lake. It is a single-story building made of wood. It has a stone chimney and a roof that slopes down on two sides. A porch wraps around three sides of the building.
The outside of the clubhouse is covered with wooden boards. The inside has a rustic, natural feel. Its design is simple but charming. It features special diamond-shaped windows. You can also see the ends of the roof beams. These details are part of the Craftsman style of architecture. Most of the building is one large main room. There are also smaller areas for a kitchen, storage, and bathrooms.
How the Club Started and Grew
A small group of people who spent their summers in Wayne started the club in 1909. Soon, many local townspeople joined too. They saw how valuable the club could be for social gatherings. The clubhouse itself opened in 1912. It was designed by Carl Fuller Davis. He was an architect from Bridgeport, Connecticut.
In its early days, the club was very active. It held boat races on the lake. It also hosted dances and other fun social events. Today, the Androscoggin Yacht Club still plays a big role in the community's social life.
