André Donner facts for kids
André Donner was an important Dutch judge. He was born in Rotterdam, Netherlands, in 1918 and passed away in Amersfoort in 1992. He became the second President of the European Court of Justice, which is a very important court in Europe, serving from 1958 to 1964.
Growing Up and Family
André Donner came from a well-known family in the Netherlands. Many of his family members were involved with law. His father, Jan Donner, was a Minister of Justice in the Dutch government. His son, Piet Hein Donner, also became a Minister of Justice. Later, his son became a top leader in the Dutch government's Council of State, which advises the government on laws. André's brother, Jan Hein Donner, was a famous chess player!
Education and Career
André studied law at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, a university in Amsterdam. He finished his studies when he was 21 years old. He also earned a special advanced degree, called a doctorate, from the same university.
In 1955, André Donner became a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. This is a group of very smart people who are recognized for their achievements in science and art.
Leading the European Court of Justice
André Donner was the President of the European Court of Justice for six years. This court helps make sure that European laws are followed fairly by all countries in the European Union. During his time as President, an important case called Van Gend en Loos v Nederlandse Administratie der Belastingen was decided. This case helped make sure that people in Europe could use European laws to protect their rights.
