Andrés de Vargas (born 1613, died 1647) was a Spanish painter. He was born in Cuenca, a city in Spain. When he was a young man, he moved to Madrid. There, he learned to paint from a teacher named Francisco Camilo.

Andrés de Vargas mostly painted religious artworks. He created paintings for churches and places where religious groups lived, called friaries. He also painted for people who paid him to create art for their homes. He made many artworks for the cathedral and other churches in Cuenca.

One of his important projects was a series of frescoes (paintings done on wet plaster walls) in the Our Lady of the Sagrario chapel. The leaders of the church in Cuenca asked him to do these paintings.

Works by Andrés de Vargas

Andrés de Vargas created many paintings during his life. Here are some of his known works:

  • Transverberación de Santa Teresa (This painting was made in 1644)
  • Martirio del brasero (This painting was later kept at the Museo de la Trinidad)
  • Ascensión de la Magdalena
  • San Roque (This painting was made in 1663 and can be found in the San Miguel church in Cuenca)
