Andy Caldecott facts for kids
Andy Caldecott (born 10 August 1964 – died 9 January 2006) was an amazing off-road motorcycle racer from Keith, South Australia. He was known for his incredible skill and friendly personality.
Andy was a true champion. He won the motorcycle part of the Australian Safari Rally four times in a row, from 2000 to 2003. He also competed in the very tough Dakar Rally in 2004, 2005, and 2006.
Andy Caldecott's Racing Adventures
In the 2006 Dakar Rally, Andy showed his speed by winning the third stage of the race. Sadly, during the ninth stage, he had a crash and passed away from a neck injury. This happened about 250 kilometers into a 599-kilometer special racing section.
Even though Andy pushed himself hard in races, he was always known for being easygoing and humble. Before he passed away, he owned a motorcycle shop in his hometown of Keith. He was married to Tracey, and they had a four-year-old daughter named Caitlin. Tracey was expecting their second child when Andy died. A special trust fund was set up to help support his wife and children.
Remembering a Champion
Before Andy went to the 2006 Dakar Rally, he made a video where he talked about another rider who had passed away. This video is now called "Andy Caldecott Memorial Tribute 2006."
To honor Andy, the Keith & Districts Motor Cycle Club and the Keith War Memorial Community Centre Committee decided to build a special memorial for him. This memorial, named the "Andy Caldecott Memorial," was opened on 14 August 2011.
On Saturday, 28 November 2015, Motorcycling SA Inc. added Andy Caldecott to their Hall of Fame. This is a special place for people who have achieved great things in motorcycling. A video was also created with help from people who knew Andy well, celebrating his life and career.
