Kids Encyclopedia Facts

An anesthesiologist is a special kind of doctor. They are experts in giving you medicine that makes you "sleep" or feel no pain during surgery. This medicine is called anesthesia. Anesthesiologists also take care of you before, during, and after your operation. Their main goal is to keep you safe and comfortable.

Anesthesiologist: Your Sleep Doctor

An anesthesiologist is a doctor who helps you when you need an operation or a procedure that might hurt. They make sure you don't feel pain. They also watch over your body's important functions, like your breathing and heart rate, while you are asleep or numb.

What Does an Anesthesiologist Do?

Anesthesiologists have several important jobs. They are not just in the operating room. They help patients in many different situations.

Before, During, and After Surgery

The most common job for an anesthesiologist is to give you anesthesia for surgery. Before your operation, they will meet with you. They will ask about your health and explain how the anesthesia will work. They choose the best type of anesthesia for you. During surgery, they stay by your side. They carefully watch your vital signs, like your heart and lungs. After surgery, they help you wake up safely and manage any pain you might have.

Helping in Other Ways

Anesthesiologists also work in other areas of the hospital.

  • Intensive Care: They help care for very sick patients in the intensive care unit (ICU). These patients often need special breathing machines or other life support.
  • Emergency Medicine: They are sometimes involved in medical emergencies. They can help stabilize patients who are badly injured or very ill.
  • Pain Management: Some anesthesiologists specialize in helping people with long-lasting pain. They use different methods to help patients feel more comfortable.

Who Was the First Anesthesiologist?

The idea of making someone "sleep" for surgery is quite old. But the first doctor to focus on giving anesthesia was John Snow (1813–1858). He was a British doctor. John Snow helped make anesthesia much safer and more common. He even gave chloroform to Queen Victoria when she had a baby!
