Angelica Singleton Van Buren (born February 13, 1818 – died December 29, 1877) was the daughter-in-law of Martin Van Buren, who was the 8th President of the United States. She stepped into the important role of First Lady of the United States because the President's wife had passed away many years earlier.
Angelica Singleton came from a well-known family. She was also related to Dolley Madison, who was the wife of President James Madison. Angelica brought her own special style to the White House when she became First Lady.
Early Life and Marriage
Angelica Singleton was born into a prominent family. She married Abraham Van Buren, the President's son, in 1838. After their wedding, they went on a long trip to Europe. This trip allowed them to experience different cultures.
Role as First Lady
When Angelica and Abraham returned to the United States in 1839, she began her duties as First Lady. She helped her father-in-law, President Martin Van Buren, with social events and official gatherings. She was known for her elegant way of hosting.
Life After the White House
In 1841, Martin Van Buren was not re-elected as president. Angelica and her husband, Abraham, then moved to Kinderhook, New York, to a place called Lindenwald. During the colder winter months, they would often stay at their family home in South Carolina. From 1848 until her death in 1877, Angelica lived in New York City.
