Anguilloidei facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Anguilloidei are a special group of fish that are part of the larger family of eels. Think of them as a specific branch on the eel family tree! This group includes some interesting types of eels that live in different parts of the world.

Currently, the Anguilloidei suborder has three main families:

  • Anguillidae: These are known as freshwater eels. They are famous for their long journeys, often starting in the ocean and then swimming into rivers and lakes.
  • Serrivomeridae: These are called sawtooth eels. They get their name from their unique teeth, which look a bit like the teeth of a saw.
  • Nemichthyidae: These are snipe eels. They have very long, thin bodies and jaws that look like a snipe bird's beak.

Scientists sometimes change how they group animals as they learn more. In the past, the Anguilloidei group used to include other families of eels. These included Chlopsidae (false morays), Heterenchelyidae (mud eels), Moringuidae (worm eels), Muraenidae (moray eels), and Myrocongridae (thin eels). But now, these families have been moved to their own new groups because scientists found better ways to classify them.
