The Anguispira alternata, also known as the flamed disc or flamed tigersnail, is a type of air-breathing land snail. It's a mollusk that lives on land and belongs to the family Discidae, which are often called disk snails.
Meet the Flamed Disc Snail!
Flamed disc snails are medium-sized. Their shells usually measure between 17 and 25 millimeters (about 0.67 to 0.98 inches) across. This makes them about the size of a large button or a quarter.
Where Do Flamed Discs Live?
You can find flamed disc snails in wooded areas. They often hide around logs, inside hollow trees, and under rocks. These snails live across a wide area in eastern North America. Their home range stretches from New Brunswick, Canada, all the way south to northern Florida. To the west, they can be found in northeastern Texas, Kansas, and western Minnesota.
What Do Flamed Discs Eat?
Flamed disc snails are herbivores. This means they eat plants. They especially like to munch on decaying plant material, which is like old, rotting leaves and wood. They also enjoy eating fungi, which are like mushrooms, and algae, which are tiny plant-like organisms.
