Anicetus Bongsu Antonius Sinaga (born September 25, 1941 – died November 7, 2020) was an important leader in the Roman Catholic Church in Indonesia. He was a member of a religious group called the Capuchin Friars. He served as a bishop in Sibolga and later as an archbishop in Medan.

Anicetus Sinaga's Life
Early Life and Becoming a Priest
Anicetus Bongsu Antonius Sinaga was born in a place called Nagadolok in Simalungun Regency, Indonesia. From a young age, he chose to dedicate his life to the church. He became a priest in 1969.
Leading the Church
In 1981, Anicetus Sinaga became a bishop for the Diocese of Sibolga. A bishop is a high-ranking leader in the church who oversees a specific area. He served in Sibolga until 2004.
Later, he moved to the Archdiocese of Medan. An archdiocese is a larger church area, usually led by an archbishop. In 2009, he officially became the Archbishop of Medan. He took over from Alfred Gonti Pius Datubara.
His Writings
Besides his church duties, Archbishop Sinaga also studied and wrote. He was very interested in the spiritual beliefs of the Toba Batak group in Indonesia. He wrote a book based on his studies from the Catholic University of Leuven. The book was called The Toba-Batak High God: Transcendence and Immanence.
Later Years
Archbishop Sinaga continued to serve the church until 2018. On December 7, 2018, Pope Francis accepted his request to retire from his role as Archbishop of Medan.
Sadly, in October 2020, it was announced that Archbishop Sinaga had caught the COVID-19 virus. He passed away in a hospital on November 7, 2020.
