Animals in War Memorial facts for kids
The Animals in War Memorial is a special monument in Hyde Park, London. It remembers the many animals that helped and died alongside British and allied soldiers in wars throughout history. English sculptor David Backhouse designed this memorial. It was officially opened in November 2004 by Anne, Princess Royal.

A Memorial for Animal Heroes
This memorial was inspired by a book called Animals in War by Jilly Cooper. People donated £1.4 million to build it. Jilly Cooper helped manage this fund.
What the Memorial Looks Like
The memorial has a curved wall made of Portland stone. It is about 16.8 meters long and 17.7 meters wide. This wall shows pictures of animals struggling. There are also two bronze mules carrying heavy loads, walking up steps. Beyond them, a bronze horse and a bronze dog look into the distance.
Where to Find It
You can find the memorial on Park Lane, near Upper Brook Street. It is on the eastern side of Hyde Park. Princess Anne officially opened it on November 24, 2004.
A Small Setback
In May 2013, the memorial was damaged. Someone spray-painted words on it. It was later cleaned and repaired.

The memorial has several important messages carved into its stone. These messages are all in capital letters. There are also smaller inscriptions that thank the people who created and funded the memorial.
