The Animals in War Memorial is a special statue and set of plaques in Confederation Park in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It was created to remember and honor the many animals that have helped the Canadian military in different wars and conflicts. These animals have served bravely alongside soldiers since the Second Boer War.
What the Memorial Looks Like
The memorial has a statue of a dog and three special plaques. These are placed on a stone base. You can find it near the South African War Memorial and the National Aboriginal Veterans Monument in Ottawa.
The plaques have important messages written on them in both English and French. They are dedicated to different animals that served:
- A general dedication to all animals in war
- A dedication to Mules
- A dedication to Horses
- A dedication to Dogs
The artist who designed the plaques and the dog statue is David Clendining, who lives in Ottawa. Laureen Harper, who is the wife of a former Canadian Prime Minister, was an important supporter of this project.
How the Memorial Was Built
The idea for the Animals in War Memorial came from Lloyd Swick. He was a veteran who served in both World War II and the Korean War. He remembered a painting of a war horse from his high school days in 1939.
Lloyd Swick and his supporters shared their idea for the memorial in 2010. They presented it to the National Capital Commission Committee. Their dream came true, and the memorial was officially revealed on November 3, 2012.
