What Happens at AFO?
AFO is packed with exciting things to do for everyone who loves anime and gaming. Here are some of the main activities you can expect:
Artist Alley and Vendors
- Artist Alley: This is a special area where talented artists sell their original artwork, prints, and crafts. You can find unique fan art of your favorite characters or discover new artists!
- Vendors: Many shops set up booths to sell cool merchandise like manga, anime DVDs, figures, clothing, and other collectibles. It's a great place to find something special to take home.
Cosplay Fun
- Cosplay Contests: Cosplay is when people dress up as characters from anime, manga, video games, or movies. At AFO, you can see amazing costumes and even join contests to show off your own! It's a big part of the fun.
Games and Entertainment
- Video Game Room: If you love gaming, you'll enjoy the video game room where you can play different games with friends or challenge other attendees.
- Panels: These are like mini-presentations or discussions led by guests or experts. You can learn about different anime topics, how to draw, or even how to get into voice acting.
- Rave: AFO often has a dance party with cool music and lights, which is a fun way to end the day and hang out with other attendees.
- Maid Cafe: This is a themed cafe experience where servers dress up in cute maid or butler outfits, offering a unique and fun dining experience.
- Interactive Games: Sometimes, there are special games like "Orlandia" that happen throughout the convention, where you can participate and solve puzzles or challenges.
Giving Back
AFO also cares about helping others! In 2009, for example, the convention held a charity event that raised money for Child's Play, a charity that provides toys and games to children in hospitals.
AFO's Journey Through Time
Anime Festival Orlando started planning its first event way back in December 1999. The very first convention took place in August 2000. Over the years, AFO has grown and moved to different locations in Florida before settling at its current home in Orlando.
One interesting moment in AFO's history happened in 2006. The convention actually shared its venue with another big event where Governor Jeb Bush was speaking! It was a busy time at the hotel.
Like many events around the world, AFO faced challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2020 convention was first moved from June to November, but sadly, it had to be cancelled completely to keep everyone safe. However, AFO has continued to be an active and popular event for anime fans!
