Anja Feldmann is a well-known German computer scientist. She was born on March 8, 1966, in Bielefeld. She is famous for her work on how the internet works and how to make it faster.

Becoming a Computer Scientist

Anja Feldmann started her journey by studying computer science at Universität Paderborn. She earned her first degree there in 1990.

She then moved to the United States to continue her studies. At Carnegie Mellon University, she earned her Master's degree in 1991. Later, in 1995, she completed her Ph.D., which is the highest university degree.

After finishing her studies, Anja Feldmann worked as a researcher. She spent four years at AT&T Labs Research. She also held research jobs at Saarland University and Technical University Munich.

Working with the Internet

In 2006, Anja Feldmann became a professor at the Technische Universität Berlin. She worked at the Telekom Innovation Laboratories. Her job was to teach and research Internet Network Architectures.

As a professor, her main research looked at how the internet is used. She studied how much data travels online and how to make networks work better. She also researched how to find and fix problems with internet speed.

Anja Feldmann also explored ways to detect unwanted visitors on networks. She helped design better ways for computer networks to be built. A fellow scientist, Alex Snoeren, said she was key to making internet measurement a real science.

Leadership and Awards

From 2009 to 2013, Professor Feldmann was the Dean of the Computer Science and Electrical Engineering department. This was at the Technische Universität Berlin in Germany.

She also served on the supervisory board of a big software company called SAP. She was on this board from 2012 until early 2018.

In October 2017, she became a director at the Max Planck Institute for Informatics. Here, she focuses on researching the way the internet is designed and built.

Anja Feldmann has received many important awards for her work:

  • In 2009, she became a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina. This is a very old and respected science academy.
  • In 2011, she won the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize. This is one of the highest awards for research in Germany.
  • Also in 2011, she received the Berlin Science Award.
  • In 2023, she was named an ACM Fellow. This is a special honor from the Association for Computing Machinery.

Other Activities

  • She is a member of the Supervisory Board for the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).
