Ann Deas facts for kids
Ann Deas (who was active around 1847) was an American hotel owner and manager. She was famous for owning and running the Mansion House Hotel in Charleston, South Carolina, from 1834 to 1847.
Ann Deas was the daughter of Abigail Deas Jones. Her stepfather was Jehu Jones Sr. (1769-1833). Her family belonged to a group called "Free Colored" people in Charleston, South Carolina. Both her mother and stepfather had been enslaved, but they gained their freedom in 1798. Ann Deas was also the half-sister of Jehu Jones.
Starting a Famous Hotel
In 1815, Ann's stepfather, Jehu Jones Sr., bought a building called the Burrows-Hall House. He turned it into a very successful hotel known as the Jones Inn. This hotel became one of the most popular places in Charleston, especially for wealthy white visitors.
Ann Deas Takes Over
After her stepfather died in 1833, Ann Deas took over the hotel in 1834. Her mother had also passed away by then. Ann Deas managed the hotel with great skill and success. It continued to be one of the most important and fancy hotels in Charleston. She decided to rename it the Mansion House Hotel.
Ann Deas was a very successful businesswoman. She made sure the hotel continued to be a top choice for important guests. She managed her staff and the hotel's daily operations, keeping its reputation as an elite place to stay.
Retirement
Ann Deas retired from running the hotel in 1847. She passed the business on to her friend and business partner, Eliza A. Johnson.
