Ann Oenone Grocott (born 1938) is an Australian artist and writer. She is known for her paintings and for writing books for children. Her children's books have even been translated into other languages like Swedish and Danish.

Ann Grocott creates many types of art. She paints people, landscapes, and everyday scenes. She also makes art using different materials. These include fabric, wood, cement, and objects she finds. Her art has been shown in many places around the world.

Ann Grocott's Early Life

Ann Wood was born in 1938. Her birthplace was Glenelg, South Australia. Art runs in her family. Her father, Noel Herbert Wood, was a painter. Her uncle, Rex Wood, was also a painter and printmaker.

During World War II, Ann and her family moved. They went from Bedarra Island to Woodend, Victoria. Later, Ann Wood married Terry Grocott.

Ann Grocott as an Author

When she was in her 40s, Ann Grocott started writing books. She published two novels for young readers. These books were for children aged 8 to 12 years.

  • Duck For Danger (1985) is one of her books. It tells the story of a character who travels a lot. The book was described as funny and full of surprises.
  • Danni's Desperate Journey (1987) is her other novel. This book is a science fiction fantasy. It takes the main character on a journey through the universe.

Both of Ann Grocott's novels became popular. Duck For Danger was translated into Swedish. Its Swedish title is Fly för livet, Micky. Danni's Desperate Journey was translated into Danish. It is known as Fridas farlige faerd in Danish.

Ann Grocott also wrote a helpful guide. It was called How to write for children (1985). She also published several short stories.

Ann Grocott's Art Career

Ann Grocott later decided to focus on painting. She taught herself art for ten years. She also studied at the Australian Flying Arts School. This school was special. Its leader, Mervyn Moriarty, flew to faraway places. He gave art workshops in remote areas. In 1991, Ann Grocott earned a special diploma in Fine Art. She got it from Monash University.

Worldwide Art Recognition

In 1999, Ann Grocott was chosen for a big event. She was one of five artists from Australia. They were part of "Our World in the Year 2000." This was a worldwide art show. Her painting, New Generation -- Ancient Land (1998), was shown. It traveled to London, Stockholm, and Brussels. Prince Charles even opened the London show. The painting was also displayed in New York. This was part of a United Nations art exhibition. Later, a gallery in Bundaberg bought her painting. It is now part of their permanent collection.
