Ann Spence Black (1861 - 1947) was a Scottish artist. She was well-known for her beautiful paintings of landscapes and flowers.

Who Was Ann Spence Black?

Ann Spence Black was born in a place called Dysart in Fife, Scotland. It seems she learned to paint all by herself, which is pretty amazing! She lived in Edinburgh for most of her life.

Her Artistic Journey

Even though she lived in Edinburgh, Ann loved to paint many different parts of Scotland. She often painted scenes from the Scottish east coast. She also painted the area around Culross. Ann was a very busy painter. She created many landscapes and also made bright, colorful paintings of flowers.

What Did She Paint?

Ann Spence Black was known for two main types of art:

  • Landscapes: These are paintings of natural scenery, like mountains, rivers, and coastlines.
  • Flower Paintings: These were often very colorful and showed different kinds of flowers.

Showing Her Art to the World

Ann was a regular artist who showed her work at the Royal Scottish Academy. She exhibited there for many years, from 1896 to 1946. This means her paintings were displayed for people to see.

She also showed about 95 of her artworks at the Royal Scottish Watercolour Society, which is called the RSW for short. She had nearly 40 paintings shown at the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts. Ann was chosen to be a member of the RSW in 1917. Later, in 1940, she also became a member of the Society of Scottish Artists.

Today, you can find Ann Spence Black's paintings in several places. Some of her works are part of the City of Edinburgh collection. You can also see her art at Kirkcaldy Galleries. The McManus museum in Dundee has some of her paintings too. Finally, the University of St Andrews also holds some of her artwork.
