Kirkcaldy Galleries

Kirkcaldy Galleries is the main museum, library, and exhibition space in Kirkcaldy, a town in Fife, Scotland. It's a fantastic place where you can explore art, history, and find exciting books!

The Story of Kirkcaldy Galleries

The land for this important building was given by John Nairn, whose family was famous for making linoleum. The Galleries opened its doors in 1925. One of the first people in charge was John Blyth, a local cloth-maker. His grandson, Michael Portillo, later became a well-known politician in the UK.

What You Can See Inside

Kirkcaldy Galleries is home to many amazing things.

Incredible Art Collections

The art gallery has a huge collection of paintings by famous Scottish artists. You can see many works by William McTaggart and Samuel Peploe, who was one of the "Scottish Colourists". The gallery also features important art from the "Glasgow Boys" group.

Exploring Local History

On the ground floor, there's a special exhibition that tells the story of Kirkcaldy's industrial past. You can learn all about how the town grew and what industries were important here. Don't forget to check out the cafe, which displays beautiful examples of Wemyss Ware pottery. This unique pottery was made right in Kirkcaldy from the 1890s to the 1930s.

A Modern Makeover

In 2012, Fife Council gave the building a big update, costing about £2.5 million. It reopened in June 2013, looking brand new!

What's New at the Galleries

Today, Kirkcaldy Galleries offers even more for visitors. It has a modern museum, a library for everyone, and a special library just for children. There's also a computer area, a cafe, a gift shop, and rooms for meetings. You can also find local family and history rooms, perfect for learning about your ancestors or the town's past.

Special Art Displays
