Who Was Anna Boyksen?

Anna Boyksen was born on August 11, 1881. Her hometown was Havendorfersand, which was part of the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg in the German Empire. Her father, Dietrich Anton Boyksen, was a merchant. Her mother was Mathilde Boyksen.

In 1906, Anna started studying at the Technical University of Munich. She chose to study electrical engineering. This was a very unusual path for a woman at that time. Two years later, she earned her "Vordiplom." This is like a first-level degree or a major step in her engineering studies.

After her engineering studies, Anna decided to learn even more. She went to the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. There, she studied economics and law. In 1911, she finished her big research paper, called a dissertation. It was about how stock exchanges in Germany worked. She wrote this paper using her married name, Anna Helene Koch.

Her Lasting Impact: The Anna Boyksen Center

Even though Anna Boyksen lived a long time ago, her legacy is still strong today. The Anna Boyksen Diversity Research Center at the Technical University of Munich is named after her. This center studies human diversity. It looks at how different people and ideas can help society.

A main goal of the center is to see how science and engineering can benefit. They want to know how having more diverse people can make these fields better. This means including people from all backgrounds and with different ways of thinking.

The Anna Boyksen Fellowship

Since 2014, the Anna Boyksen Fellowship has been offered. This special award is for amazing international scholars and researchers. These scholars come to Munich to study problems related to gender and diversity. They work with researchers at the Technical University of Munich.

The fellowship helps the university reach a big goal. They want to be the most welcoming university for women in Germany. It also helps share new ideas and solutions around the world. This way, Anna Boyksen's pioneering spirit continues to inspire new generations.
