Anna Jane McKeag (born 1864, died 1947) was an amazing American psychologist and teacher. She became a university professor and was the very first woman president of Wilson College.
Early Life and Education
Anna Jane McKeag was born on March 13, 1864, in West Finley, Pennsylvania. When she was younger, from 1881 to 1892, she taught at a school. During this time, she also taught philosophy at Wilson College. Wilson College was a special school just for women, located in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania.
Anna worked hard on her own education too. In 1895, she earned her first degree, an AB, from Wilson College. Five years later, in 1900, she earned her PhD from the University of Pennsylvania. A PhD is a very high degree that shows someone is an expert in their field.
A Career in Teaching and Leadership
After getting her PhD, Anna Jane McKeag became a professor of philosophy and a dean at Wilson College. She stayed there until 1902. Then, she was invited to teach at Wellesley College, another well-known college.
While she was teaching at Wellesley, something exciting happened. In 1911, she was asked to return to Wilson College, this time as its president! She officially started her new role in February 1912. This was a big deal because she became the first woman president of Wilson College. During her time as president, from 1911 to 1915, she worked to make the college's academic programs even stronger.
After leading Wilson College for three years, Anna Jane McKeag went back to Wellesley College. She continued to teach there until she retired.
She passed away in Wellesley, Massachusetts, in 1947. Her gravestone can be found in Washington Cemetery in Washington, Pennsylvania.
