Anna Kurtycz (1970-2019) was a talented artist from Mexico and Poland. She was especially good at making art using a technique called woodcut engraving. This is where you carve a picture into a block of wood, then use it to print images.

About Anna Kurtycz

Early Life and Education

Anna Kurtycz was born in Mexico in 1970. Her father, Marcos Kurtycz, was a famous performance artist. Her mother, Mercedes Escamilla, was an economist and writer. Anna spent most of her childhood in Guadalajara, Mexico.

She was very smart and studied Biology at the University of Guadalajara. Later, she earned a PhD in Communication from Paris University XIII in France.

Art and Career

From 1990 to 2003, Anna worked as an artist. She often combined her love for art with her knowledge of Biology. She used her skills to create educational programs. These programs helped teach people about protecting the environment in Latin America.

Anna also worked as a consultant for UNESCO. She wrote for Mexican newspapers like El Occidental, El Jaliscience, PuntoG, and Público. All this time, she kept working on her graphic art.

Her artwork has been shown in many countries. These include Benin, Ghana, Canada, France, Mexico, The Netherlands, the United States, and Spain. She often worked with the Dutch artist RUDEK on different art projects. Anna Kurtycz passed away in 2019 in The Hague, Netherlands.

Working in Africa

From 2008 to 2015, Anna lived and worked in Africa. She spent time in Ghana and Benin. There, she created art shows and art projects. She also held printing workshops for both adults and children. Her art and printing work was supported by local groups and non-profit organizations.

Remembering Her Father's Work

In 2016, Anna presented a special book. It was called Marcos Kurtycz. Vida y muerte de un impresor. This book was about the art of her father, Marcos Kurtycz. She presented it at the Museo Universitario del Chopo in Mexico.

Anna Kurtycz's artwork is listed in important art collections. These include the French Association for Contemporary Engraving and the Contemporary Artists Catalogue of the Bibliothèque nationale de France.

  • Movimiento (The Netherlands, 2019). This was with the Mexican Embassy to The Netherlands.
  • Graphic Dialogues (The Netherlands, 2020). This show looked back at the art of both Marcos and Anna Kurtycz. It was with the Embassy of Mexico to The Netherlands.
