Anna Rothery is a British politician. She served as the Lord Mayor of Liverpool from September 2019 to May 2021. The Lord Mayor is a special civic leader for the city.

Anna Rothery's Early Life

Anna Rothery was born and grew up in Liverpool, England, in the 1950s. Her parents were Bernadette and Hubert George Rothery.

Her father passed away when she was young. Her mother raised Anna and her three siblings.

Anna went to Granby Street Primary School, St Silas Junior School, and Paddington Comprehensive School. She studied subjects like sociology and law at university. She also earned a master's degree in Business and Regeneration.

Anna Rothery's Political Career

Since 2006, Anna Rothery has been a councillor for the Princes Park area in Liverpool. A councillor is someone elected to represent a local area in the city council.

From 2010 to 2013, she led the Culture, Tourism and Sport committee in Liverpool. This committee helps make decisions about fun things to do in the city.

In 2012, Rothery became the first Liverpool councillor to speak at the United Nations in Geneva. She talked about how different religions, languages, and cultures can live together. She also works as an ambassador for human rights. She is part of groups like Operation Black Vote, which helps more Black, Asian, and minority ethnic people get involved in politics.

Becoming Lord Mayor of Liverpool

In September 2019, Anna Rothery made history. She became the first Black Lord Mayor of Liverpool. She took on this role after the previous Lord Mayor resigned.

The Lord Mayor is a special position given by the city's Mayor. It is not a role that people vote for directly. During her time as Lord Mayor, Anna helped raise money for local charities. These included the Anthony Walker Foundation and the LCR Pride Foundation.

Running for Mayor of Liverpool

In 2021, Anna Rothery was considered to be a candidate for the Labour Party to become the Mayor of Liverpool. She was one of three people chosen for this.

She announced that if she became Mayor, she would work to change the way Liverpool's mayor system worked. The other candidates also agreed with this idea.

Later, all three candidates, including Anna, were told they could not run for the position. Anna Rothery said she was disappointed by this decision.

After the Labour Party

On November 23, 2021, Anna Rothery announced she was leaving the Labour Party. She said she felt the party was not doing enough to help people. She decided to continue serving on the Liverpool Council as an independent member. This means she was not part of a specific political party anymore.

From 2022 to 2023, Rothery was the leader of a political group called "Liverpool Community Independents".
