Anna Rothery is a British politician. She served as the Lord Mayor of Liverpool from September 2019 to May 2021.

Early Life and Education

Anna Rothery grew up in Toxteth, Liverpool, England, in the 1950s. Her parents were Bernadette and Hubert George Rothery. Her father passed away when she was young, and her mother raised Anna and her three siblings.

Anna attended Granby Street Primary School, St Silas Junior School, and Paddington Comprehensive School. She went on to study sociology, psychology, and law at university. Later, she earned a master's degree in Business and Regeneration.

Political Career

Since 2006, Anna Rothery has been a local councillor for the Princes Park area in Liverpool. A councillor is someone elected to represent people in a local government area.

From 2010 to 2013, she was the Chair of the Culture, Tourism and Sport committee in Liverpool. This committee helps make decisions about cultural events, tourism, and sports in the city.

In 2012, Rothery became the first Liverpool councillor to speak at the United Nations in Geneva. She spoke about different religious, language, and cultural groups. She is also an ambassador for the British Institute for Human Rights in the North West of England. Anna is part of groups like Operation Black Vote, which helps more people from diverse backgrounds get involved in politics. She also helps coordinate support for migrant workers in the North West.

Lord Mayor of Liverpool

In September 2019, Anna Rothery made history. She became the first black Lord Mayor of Liverpool. This role is a civic duty, meaning it's about representing the city at events and ceremonies. The city's Mayor chooses the Lord Mayor; it is not an elected position.

During her time as Lord Mayor, Anna helped raise money for local charities. These included the Anthony Walker Foundation, LCR Pride Foundation, and Merseyside Somali Association.

Running for Mayor of Liverpool

In 2021, Anna Rothery was one of three people considered to be the Labour Party's candidate for Mayor of Liverpool. The other candidates were Ann O'Byrne and Wendy Simon. The current Mayor, Joe Anderson, had decided not to run again.

Anna Rothery announced that if she became Mayor, she would work to change the way Liverpool's city leadership works. The other candidates also agreed with this idea.

Later, all three candidates were told they could not continue in the selection process. Anna Rothery expressed her disappointment with this decision.

After the Labour Party

In November 2021, Anna Rothery decided to leave the Labour Party. She stated that she wanted to continue to stand up for her community as an independent member of Liverpool Council.

From 2022 to 2023, Rothery was the leader of a political group called "Liverpool Community Independents".
