Anna Mikhaylovna Yevreinova (1844–1919) was a pioneering Russian woman. She was a writer who supported equal rights for women, a lawyer, and someone who edited books and magazines. She made history by being the first Russian woman to earn a Doctor of Law degree. She was also the first woman to get this degree from a German university, after studying at the University of Leipzig.

Anna's Early Life and Studies

Anna Yevreinova was the daughter of Mikhail Yevreinov, a high-ranking officer who managed the Peterhof Palace. Her family tried to arrange a marriage for her, but Anna did not want to marry. She wanted to study instead.

At this time, Anna received a letter from a famous Russian mathematician named Sofya Kovalevskaya. Sofia offered to help Anna enroll in a university in Germany. Anna's family did not want her to leave. Because of this, Anna could not get a Russian passport. She was so determined to study that she crossed the border illegally. She walked through swamps in special shoes to reach Germany.

Becoming a Lawyer

Anna worked very hard and earned her Doctor of Law degree on February 21, 1873. This degree made her a qualified lawyer. Her special paper, called a dissertation, was about "The Duties of Neutral Parties towards Parties of War." This topic explored how countries that are not fighting should act towards countries that are at war.

Working as a Writer and Editor

Anna Yevreinova wrote many letters to famous writers, including Anton Chekhov. In 1885, she started her own literary magazine called Severny Vestnik. She was the main editor and owner of this magazine for its first five years. This was a big achievement for a woman at that time.

She also had a close friendship with the author Maria Feodorova.
