Anna Zofia Krygowska (1904–1988) was a Polish mathematician. She is well-known for her important work in mathematics education. This means she helped improve how math is taught in schools.

Early Life and Education

Anna Zofia Krygowska was born on September 19, 1904. Her birthplace was a city called Lwów, which was then part of Poland. She grew up in a town named Zakopane.

She went to Jagiellonian University in Kraków. In 1927, she successfully finished her studies in mathematics there.

A Career in Teaching Math

From 1927 to 1950, Anna Krygowska worked as a math teacher. She taught students in both primary and secondary schools across Poland. During World War II, she even continued teaching secretly.

In 1950, she earned her doctorate degree from Jagiellonian University. Her supervisor was Tadeusz Ważewski. After that, she joined the Pedagogical University of Kraków as a professor.

In 1958, she became the head of a new department. This department focused on the best ways to teach mathematics. She retired from her teaching career in 1974.

Global Impact on Math Education

Anna Krygowska was very active in groups that worked on improving math teaching. These groups were both in Poland and around the world.

  • In 1956, she was part of Poland's team at a UNESCO meeting. This meeting was about public education.
  • She helped organize two big conferences. These were for the International Commission for the Study and Improvement of Mathematics Teaching (CIEAEM). The conferences took place in 1960 and 1971.
  • She became the president of CIEAEM in 1970. Later, in 1974, she was named honorary president.
  • She also gave speeches about math education. This was at the International Congress of Mathematicians in both 1966 and 1970.

Anna Zofia Krygowska passed away on May 16, 1988. Her work greatly influenced how math is taught today.
