Annabella Piugattuk (born December 19, 1982) is a Canadian Inuit actress. She is best known for her role in the 2003 movie The Snow Walker.
Early Life
Annabella Piugattuk was born on December 19, 1982. Her birthplace was Frobisher Bay, Northwest Territories, Canada. This place is now known as Iqaluit, Nunavut.
She grew up in Igloolik, a village in Nunavut. Annabella lived there with her four brothers and younger sister. As a child, she spent a lot of time with her grandfather. He told her many stories about their Inuit ancestors. This helped her learn a lot about Inuit traditions. She also became very good at hunting and surviving in the wilderness.
Acting Career
Annabella first became interested in acting in grade eight. Her teacher included her in a school play. When she was 19, Annabella read a story in the Nunatsiaq News. It said that people were looking for actors for a new movie. The movie was called The Snow Walker.
Her mother encouraged her to try out. Annabella got a copy of the script from the movie company. One Friday night, she was at a community dance. A casting director named Jared Valentine asked her to audition. He wanted her to try out for the role of Kanaalaq.
Annabella went to local auditions. She was only 4 feet 9 inches tall. She and five other young people then flew to Vancouver for more tests. A few weeks after she returned home, she got the exciting news. She was offered the part in the movie!
In The Snow Walker, Annabella plays Kanaalaq. Kanaalaq is a young Inuit woman. She helps a Canadian pilot survive after his plane crashes. The crash happens in the harsh Northwest Territories. Just like her character, Annabella is an Inuit throat singer. She can also fish, hunt seals and walruses. She can even make clothes from caribou hides.
For her role in The Snow Walker, Annabella was nominated for an award. She received a Genie Award nomination in 2004. This was for best supporting actress.
In 2005, Annabella also appeared in a TV show. It was a miniseries called Into the West. She played the character named Dancing Water.
Annabella now lives in Iqaluit, Nunavut.
