Annandale, California facts for kids
Annandale is a cool area in California that used to be its own small community. Now, it's a neighborhood split between two big cities: Los Angeles, California and Pasadena, California.
The part of Annandale in Pasadena is surrounded by Colorado Boulevard to the north, San Rafael Avenue to the east, and the border with Los Angeles to the south and west. The part in Los Angeles is generally bordered by Meridian Street, Figueroa Street, Colorado Boulevard, and the Pasadena-Los Angeles border. Some of the main streets you'll find here are Figueroa Street, Avenue 64, and La Loma Road.
A long time ago, on February 24, 1924, the parts of Annandale that are now in Los Angeles officially became part of Los Angeles. This process is called annexation.
Back in the day, from 1902 to 1928, a special train system called the Pacific Electric Railway had a line just for Annandale. It was called the Annandale Line and helped people get around!
Fun Places and Landmarks
Most of the shops and businesses in Annandale are found in a small, triangle-shaped area. This is where Colorado Boulevard and Avenue 64 meet. Annandale's only park, San Rafael Park, is also in this busy spot.
Most of the neighborhood is filled with nice houses. Many of these homes were built in the 1920s and 1930s. Annandale feels a bit separate from the rest of Pasadena. It even has a small canyon with a stream running through it! There's also a tiny lake in the middle of the area. This lake was made a long time ago for watering crops, back when there was a winery called San Rafael Winery. The winery isn't there anymore.
The Church of the Angels is an old Episcopal Church in Annandale. It's so beautiful that it has been used as a filming location for many movies and TV shows!
A special part of Annandale in Pasadena is called the Poppy Peak Historic District. This area was recognized as a historic place on December 23, 2009. This means its unique old buildings and character are protected.
Schools in Annandale
For students living in the Pasadena part of Annandale, San Rafael Elementary School is the local school. After elementary school, students usually go to Blair High School for both middle school and high school. Blair High School is located in a nearby area called Oak Knoll.
If you live in the Los Angeles part of Annandale, you might go to Annandale School for elementary grades. Later, students attend Burbank Middle School and Eagle Rock High School.
Getting Around Annandale
You can get around Annandale using public transportation. The Metro Local lines 81, 180, and 256 serve the area, making it easier to travel to other parts of the city.
