Annapolis Valley First Nation facts for kids
Annapolis Valley First Nation is a community made up of Mi'kmaq people. It is located in southwestern Nova Scotia, Canada. As of 2023, about 121 people live on the reserve, and around 200 live off the reserve, making a total of 321 members. This makes it the smallest First Nation community in Nova Scotia by population.
The community has important places like a health centre, a chapel, a gas station, a tobacco shop, and a gaming centre. These places help serve the needs of the community members.
A Look at the Community's Parts
Annapolis Valley First Nation is made up of two main areas, which are like special lands set aside for the Mi'kmaq people. These areas are:
- Annapolis Valley First Nation: This part is about 59 hectares (which is like 145 acres) in size. It is located about 88 kilometres northwest of Halifax. This area was officially set up on March 3, 1880.
- St. Croix 34: This second part is larger, about 126.20 hectares (around 312 acres). It is located about 46.4 kilometres northwest of Halifax. This area was established earlier, on March 3, 1851. Currently, no one lives on this specific part of the reserve.
A Bit of History
In 1984, another Mi'kmaq community called Glooscap First Nation became its own separate First Nation. Before that, Glooscap First Nation was part of the Annapolis Valley First Nation. This separation allowed Glooscap First Nation to manage its own affairs independently.
