Dr. Annapurni Subramaniam is a famous astronomer who studies stars and galaxies. She is currently the director of the Indian Institute of Astrophysics in Bangalore, India. She is also the first woman astronomer to lead this important institute. Dr. Subramaniam studies things like groups of stars called star clusters, how stars change over time, and how stars are spread out in galaxies and special clouds of stars called Magellanic Clouds.

Early Life and School

Annapurni Subramaniam grew up in Palakkad, Kerala. She studied science at Victoria College, Palakkad. She then went on to earn her PhD, which is a very high university degree, in 1996. Her PhD research was about "Studies of star clusters and stellar evolution" at the Indian Institute of Astrophysics. Besides her amazing work in science, Dr. Subramaniam also plays the violin. Sometimes, she even plays music with her father, who is a well-known Carnatic musician named Palakkad K.S. Narayanaswamy.

Her Journey in Science

Dr. Subramaniam started her career as a researcher at the Indian Institute of Astrophysics in 1990. She worked there as a research fellow until 1996. After that, she continued her research as a postdoctoral fellow in 1998. Today, she is a professor and the director of the institute. Before becoming director, she also worked as a Scientist-C at the IIA.

She is an active member of the International Astronomical Union, which is a group of astronomers from all over the world. Dr. Subramaniam leads a team that studies different groups of stars. They look at these stars to understand how the Magellanic Clouds are built, how they have changed over time, and what they are made of.

Dr. Subramaniam also played a big role in AstroSat. This was India's first space telescope that could see different types of light from space. She was the calibration scientist for the UV imaging telescope on AstroSat. This meant she made sure the ultraviolet camera on the telescope worked perfectly to collect accurate information from space.
