The Annawan Chapter House: A Historic Meeting Place

The Annawan Chapter House is located at 206 S. Depot Street. It was built specifically for the Annawan chapter of the American Woman's League. This group used the building for their meetings and activities.

The American Woman's League and Its Mission

The American Woman's League was an important group started in 1908. It was founded by a magazine publisher named Edward Gardner Lewis. The League wanted to help women gain more rights. A big goal was to help women get the right to vote. This movement was called women's suffrage. Mr. Lewis also used the League to promote his magazines for women.

A Special Building Design

Edward Gardner Lewis hired an architectural firm from St. Louis called Helfensteller, Hirsch & Watson. They designed five different types of buildings for the League's meeting places. The Annawan Chapter House is an example of a "Class I" building. This design was for clubs that had between 30 and 60 members.

The building was designed in the Prairie School style. This style often features strong horizontal lines and open spaces. The Annawan Chapter House cost about $1,200 to build at the time.

From Club House to Home

After the Annawan chapter of the American Woman's League stopped meeting, the building changed. It was later turned into a private home.

A Recognized Landmark

On November 28, 1980, the Annawan Chapter House was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of important buildings, sites, and objects in the United States. Being on this list means the building is recognized for its historical value. It is one of nine American Woman's League chapter houses in Illinois that are on the National Register.
