Annawan's History
The first settler in the Annawan area was Daniel Morton, who built a log cabin in 1846. His son, Gilbert Morton, was the first child born there. A schoolhouse was built on the Morton property the next year. At that time, the land was quite swampy to the north, with higher ground to the south.
In 1850, a railroad company, the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad, planned a route through Henry County. This route went right through the area where the Mortons lived. In 1853, as the railroad was almost finished, Charles Atkinson and James Grant, who owned land nearby, officially created the town of Annawan.
Around the year 1900, changes were made to the Green River, and drainage systems were built. This helped turn the swampy land north of Annawan into good farmland.
When Interstate 80 was built through Henry County in the 1960s, Annawan started to grow. More businesses like restaurants and gas stations opened to serve travelers. In the early 2000s, a new housing area called North Meadow was built, and a new hotel opened near the interstate. An ethanol plant, which makes fuel, was also planned around this time.
Annawan Today
Today, Annawan has many businesses that serve both local residents and people traveling on Interstate 80. The North Meadow housing area is still there, and the town's library and offices are now in what used to be its community center.
The Patriot Renewable Fuels ethanol plant opened in 2007. It provides about 100 jobs in Annawan. The town also has one hotel, two gas stations, several restaurants, a grocery store, and a gift shop.
Between 2000 and 2012, the amount of money spent in retail stores in Annawan grew by 123%. In 2009, there were 48 businesses, and today there are 66. In 2013, construction began on a new plant next to the ethanol plant to make biodiesel, another type of fuel.
