Anne Claire Poirier was a famous Canadian film director, producer, and writer. She made history in Canadian cinema by sharing important stories about women and families. Her creative work helped inspire many other female filmmakers across Canada.

Early Life and Beginning of Career
Poirier was born on 6 June 1932 in the city of Saint-Hyacinthe. This lovely town is located in the province of Quebec. As she grew up, she developed a deep passion for cinema and storytelling.
In the 1960s, she began working at the National Film Board of Canada. During this era, very few women worked as movie directors. In fact, she was the only female filmmaker working there for many years. She worked very hard to open doors for other creative women.
Breakthrough Films and Creative Projects
Poirier directed her first major movie in 1968, called De mère en fille. This project was filmed entirely in black and white. It explored what mothers feel when they are expecting a new baby.
This film was a truly historic moment for Canadian cinema. It was the first feature-length film directed by a French-Canadian woman. Because of this, it helped inspire women to speak up and share their perspectives.
She continued making thoughtful movies throughout the 1970s and 1980s. In 1974, she directed an educational movie titled Les Filles du Roi. This film looked back at the history and culture of people living in Quebec.
Later, she directed the drama Mourir à tue-tête. In 1979, this powerful film was invited to play at the famous 1979 Cannes Film Festival. It competed in the prestigious Un Certain Regard category. Movie critics around the world praised her strong visual style and serious themes.
In 1996, Poirier directed an emotional documentary called Tu as crié: Let me go. She made this personal film to process the tragic loss of her daughter. It was an honest look at family grief and finding peace after tragedy.
She lived a long and inspiring life. Poirier passed away at her home in Outremont on 28 September 2026. She was 94 years old.
Awards and Special Achievements
Poirier earned many great awards because of her dedication to Canadian arts. In 1988, she received the prestigious Prix Albert-Tessier for her career.
Her moving 1996 documentary won the famous Genie Award for Best Feature Length Documentary. Many organizations praised her honesty and powerful camera work.
In 2001, she received the Governor General's Performing Arts Award. This prize recognized her lifetime of artistic achievement in film. In 2003, Canada honored her again. She was officially appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada.
