About Anne Claire Poirier

Anne Claire Poirier was born in Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec. In the 1960s and 1970s, she was the only female filmmaker working at the National Film Board of Canada. This was a big deal at the time!

Her first film was called De mère en fille (1968). It was a black and white documentary that looked at what it means to be a mother. The film also explored the feelings women have during pregnancy. This movie was very important for the start of the women's rights movement in Canada. It was also the very first feature film ever directed by a French-Canadian woman.

Poirier's film Mourir à tue-tête was shown at the famous 1979 Cannes Film Festival. It competed in a special section called Un Certain Regard. Her 1974 film Les Filles du Roy explored how men were seen in Quebec's history.

In 1996, she directed a documentary called Tu as crié: Let me go. This film helped her understand a very difficult personal event in her life.
