Anne Plumptre (born February 22, 1760 – died October 20, 1818) was an English writer and translator. She often worked with her sister, Annabella Plumptre. Anne was known for translating many German books and plays into English.

Anne Plumptre's Life

Anne was born in Norwich, England. She was the second daughter of Robert Plumptre, who later became the President of Queens' College, Cambridge. Anne and her younger sister, Annabella, received an excellent education. They became part of the "Enfield circle," which was a local group of smart writers and thinkers. Her brother, James Plumptre, was known for writing plays.

Early Writings and Translations

Anne was very good at several languages, especially French, Italian, Spanish, and German. She started writing articles for magazines and newspapers. A free-thinking writer named Alexander Geddes encouraged her work. Her first book was a novel called Antoinette. It was published without her name at first, but she later said it was hers.

Anne was one of the first people to introduce German plays to London. In 1798 and 1799, she translated many plays by a famous German writer named August von Kotzebue. After this, she wrote a book about Kotzebue's life and writing career, which she translated from German. This book was published in 1801.

Travels and Political Views

From 1802 to 1805, Anne lived in France. She later wrote about her experiences in a book called Narrative of a Three Years Residence in France, published in 1810. Lucy Brightwell mentioned that Anne traveled to Paris with artists John Opie and Amelia Opie in 1802.

Anne was known for supporting Napoleon. She believed he could bring a better government to England.

In 1814 and 1815, Anne visited Ireland. She wrote about her time there in a book called Narrative of a Residence in Ireland, which came out in 1817. She also translated many travel stories from French and German. The poet Helen Maria Williams was a close friend of Anne's. Anne Plumptre passed away in Norwich on October 20, 1818, at the age of 58. She had a very busy and successful career as a writer.
