Anne of Ingleside is a children's book written by the Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery. It was first published in 1939. This book is the tenth in a series of eleven stories about a character named Anne Shirley. It was the last novel Montgomery published during her lifetime.
Even though Anne of Ingleside was published later, the story actually happens before the book Rainbow Valley. There's also a collection of short stories called The Blythes Are Quoted, which was written in the early 1940s but not published until 2009. This collection finishes Anne's story.
What the Story Is About
The story of Anne of Ingleside begins seven years after the book Anne's House of Dreams. Anne visits her friend Diana Wright and Diana's daughter in Avonlea. This happens after a sad event, the funeral of Gilbert's father.
When Anne returns home, she lives in an old house now called "Ingleside." Her five children are waiting for her.
- James Matthew, called Jem, is the oldest at seven.
- Walter Cuthbert is about six. He loves poetry and is sometimes thought of as a bit sensitive.
- Twins Anne (Nan) and Diana (Di) are five. They look very different! Nan has brown hair and hazel eyes, while Di has red hair and green eyes.
- Shirley is two years old. He is a favorite of Susan Baker, who helped care for him when Anne was very sick after he was born.
The book also tells about a long visit from Gilbert's aunt, Mary Maria Blythe. She is not very pleasant and was only supposed to stay for two weeks. But she ends up staying for months! She finally leaves when Anne accidentally upsets her by planning a surprise birthday party. Everyone in the family is very relieved when she goes.
The story covers about four years. During this time, Anne and Gilbert have their youngest child. She is named Bertha Marilla Blythe, but everyone calls her Roly-Poly or just 'Rilla'.
The book shares many adventures, with each story focusing on one of Anne's children. They often get into funny misunderstandings or mishaps. Sometimes, the honest Ingleside children are tricked by other kids who tell lies to seem more interesting.
- Nan is fooled by a classmate into thinking she was swapped at birth.
- Walter is convinced by a friend that his mother is dying.
- Di has two stories where she makes friends with girls who trick her.
In other stories:
- Jem, the oldest, deals with losing a pet.
- Rilla, the youngest, gets the idea that it's embarrassing to carry a cake. She tries very hard to avoid being seen with one.
Shirley, the third son, is in the book, but he doesn't have his own special story. This is also true in Rainbow Valley, the next book in the series.
Towards the end of the book, Anne starts to worry. She thinks Gilbert has become distant and might not love her as much anymore. One evening, they spend time with Christine Stuart, who was once Anne's rival for Gilbert's affection. Anne suddenly realizes how tired Gilbert looks. She starts to wonder if she has been taking Gilbert for granted instead. It turns out Anne was wrong. Gilbert's lack of attention was because he was worried about one of his patients. He surprises Anne with an anniversary gift and promises a trip to Europe for a medical meeting.
