Annemirl Bauer's Life and Art
Annemirl Bauer was born in Jena, Germany, on April 10, 1939. She studied art at a special school called the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Dresden. Annemirl was a very active artist, creating many paintings during her life.
Speaking Out for Change
Annemirl Bauer was also brave enough to speak up about things she thought were unfair in East Germany. This country was officially known as the German Democratic Republic (GDR). She was concerned about rules that made women join the military. She also spoke out against the strict limits on people traveling to West Germany.
Because she expressed these strong opinions, Annemirl was removed from the East German Association of Visual Artists (Verband Bildender Künstler). This group was important for artists in East Germany.
Remembering Annemirl Bauer
Annemirl Bauer passed away in Berlin, Germany, on August 23, 1989.
Years later, in 2010, a park in Berlin was named in her honor. It is called Annemirl-Bauer-Platz.
In 2019, some of her artwork was shown in an exhibit. This exhibit was called The Medea Insurrection: Radical Women Artists Behind the Iron Curtain. It took place at the Wende Museum in Culver City, California.
