Annet Schaap (born February 27, 1965) is a super talented Dutch artist. She is famous for drawing pictures in children's books. She also writes her own amazing stories for kids. Annet was born in Ochten, a town in the Netherlands.

Annet's Journey to Art

Annet Schaap loved art from a young age. She studied at an art school in Kampen. Later, she went to the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. This is a very well-known art school. From 1995 to 1999, she also went to a special writers' school in Amsterdam. This helped her learn how to write her own stories.

Drawing for Other Authors

Annet started her career as an illustrator in 1988. Her first children's book was Joppe, Julia en Jericho. It was written by an Austrian author named Christine Nöstlinger.

After that, Annet drew pictures for many, many books. She worked with famous Dutch authors like Francine Oomen and Jacques Vriens. She also illustrated books for Mieke van Hooft, Thea Dubelaar, and Janneke Schotveld. Her drawings even appeared in popular children's magazines. These included Okki and Taptoe.

Writing Her Own Stories

In 2017, Annet Schaap wrote her very first book. It was called Lampje, which means 'Little Lamp' in Dutch. This book was a huge success!

Lampje won several big awards. These included the Nienke van Hichtum-prijs, the Woutertje Pieterse Prijs, and the Gouden Griffel. It was amazing because Annet was the first person to win the Woutertje Pieterse Prijs with her very first book. She was also only the second author ever to win all three of these important awards for one book. The first was Peter van Gestel in 2001.

In 2018, Lampje won another award called the Boekenleeuw. This book has been translated into English as Lampie and the Children of the Sea. In 2020, it was even nominated for the Carnegie Medal. This is a very important award for children's books in the UK. It was the first time a translated book was nominated for this award!
