About Annette Snell

Annette Snell was born Annetta Snell in Orlando, Florida. She became a talented singer who made music in the 1960s and 1970s. Her songs were mostly in the style of soul and R&B.

Her Early Music Career

In the early 1960s, Annette was part of a singing group called the Mar-Vells. They were a vocal backing group, meaning they sang harmonies behind a main singer. Later, she joined another girl group called The Fabulettes. This group released several songs in 1965 and 1966.

In 1968, Annette decided to leave the group. She moved to New York and then to Nashville, Tennessee. Her goal was to start a solo career, meaning she wanted to sing on her own. She began recording songs under the name Annetta. One of her first solo recordings was "Since There Is No More You," which she sang with Paul Kelly.

Solo Success and Later Years

Paul Kelly helped Annette get noticed by Buddy Killen, who was a record producer. A record producer helps artists make their music. Annette then released more songs, all written by Kelly.

Her biggest hit song was "You Oughta' Be Here With Me" in 1973. This song reached number 19 on the Billboard R&B music chart. The next year, she had two more songs that made it onto the R&B chart: "Get Your Thing Together" (number 44) and "Just as Hooked As I’ve Been" (number 71). These songs were released on the Dial record label.

Annette then signed a deal to record an album for Epic Records. She worked on her music in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, with famous session musicians known as the Swampers. Session musicians are professional musicians who are hired to play on recordings.

In early 1977, Annette was returning home after working on songs for her new album. Her flight, Southern Airways Flight 242, crashed in New Hope, Georgia, on April 4, 1977. She was buried in Dade North Memorial Park Cemetery in Opa-locka, Florida.

Annette Snell was married to Pete Jackson, who was a member of the band Touch of Class.
