Annmarie Morais was born in Jamaica in 1973. She is a talented Jamaican-Canadian screenwriter. She is famous for writing the movie How She Move. Annmarie studied Film and Video at York University. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1995.
Annmarie received money to make two movies. These were Hotel Babylon and Da Kink in My Hair. They were shown on Vision TV in 2004 and 2005. Hotel Babylon tells the story of newcomers to Canada. They work together in a hotel in Winnipeg. Da Kink in My Hair was based on a play. It was about a beauty salon in a Jamaican-Canadian area. Annmarie also helped write the TV show based on this play. It aired on Global in 2007.
Winning the Nicholl Prize
Annmarie Morais made history. She was the first Canadian to win the important Nicholl Fellowship in Screenwriting. This award is for talented screenwriters. She was also the first person to win with a script she had sent in before. Her script, called Bleeding, was a finalist in 1998. She sent it again in 1999, and this time she won! The prize is given by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences. Annmarie received $25,000 with the award.
The Movie How She Move
While at York University, Annmarie made a short film. It was a documentary called Steppin. It was about step-dancing in Toronto. In 2004, she got money from Telefilm to make a full movie. This movie was based on the same idea. It was first called Step. Later, it became How She Move. This film was chosen for the 2007 Sundance Film Festival. At Sundance, many companies wanted to buy the movie. Paramount and MTV Films offered $3.4 million! The movie was released in cinemas in the United States and Canada in January 2007.
What Annmarie is Working on Now
Annmarie Morais divides her time between Los Angeles and Toronto. She has created a TV show for ABC Family. It is about high-school cheerleaders. The show is called The Flip Side. She is also writing a thrilling movie. It is set in London and called The Collectors. Another Jamaican-Canadian, Clement Virgo, will direct it. Annmarie is also adapting a book into a script. The book is Jane Finlay-Young's novel From Bruised Fell.
