Anolaima's History
A European explorer named Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada first found Anolaima in 1538. The original people living there were the "Anolaymas." They were part of the Panche Tribe. These were some of the first tribes the Spanish explorers met. They had come down from the Zipacón region and the Bogotá savanna.
In 1538, the explorer Gonzalo Jiménez de Quezada led an expedition. However, his group was defeated by the local tribes in the Battle of Tocarema.
Fun Festivals and Tourism
Anolaima celebrates two special events every year: Corpus Christi and Peasant's Day. These celebrations usually happen around the first holiday weekend in June. Corpus Christi is a Christian holiday that honors the Eucharist. It is often held on a Thursday to connect it with the Last Supper.
In Anolaima, the celebration usually starts on Friday and ends on the following Monday. The last day honors the local farmers. They receive food, prizes, and trophies for their hard work.
Farmers bring the best fruits and vegetables from their farms. They use them to create amazing designs and sculptures. These can look like animals or people. They are made from fruits, seeds, vegetables, and sometimes even live animals! The best sculpture or arch wins a special trophy.
During the Corpus festival, there are music bands and dance groups every day. You can also hear great orchestra bands playing salsa, merengue, and vallenato music. On Sunday morning, there is a big procession. Schools with their marching bands and military bands join in. A special church service, called the Eucharist, is also held at the main square.
