About Antarctic Bay
Antarctic Bay is a natural inlet of the sea. It is surrounded by land on three sides. This makes it a sheltered area. The bay is part of the larger South Georgia area. This island is known for its wildlife and rugged landscape.
Discovery and Naming
Antarctic Bay was likely first seen in 1775. This was during a British journey led by James Cook. Cook was a famous explorer.
Later, in 1902, the bay was explored more closely. This exploration was done by the Swedish Antarctic Expedition. This group was led by Otto Nordenskiöld. They gave the bay its name. They named it after their ship, the Antarctic.
Nearby Features
There was once another name for this bay. It was sometimes called Woodward Harbour. This name came from Mount Woodward, a mountain located nearby.
Off the eastern side of the bay's entrance are two islands. These islands are called The Guides. They are covered in a type of tall grass called tussock.
